PROF. HOUMIN YAN

DIRECTOR

Prof. Yan was Dean of Business, City University of Hong Kong. He is currently the Chair Professor of Management Sciences, and the director of M.Sc. in Accounting and Finance with AI and Fintech Applications. He was Professor at The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), and a cofounder of CUHK spin-off technology company. He was an Associate Director and Science Advisor for the Hong Kong R&D Center for Logistics and Supply Chain Management Enabling Technologies. He has also worked as an Associate Professor at the School of Management, University of Texas at Dallas. Professor Yan is a celebrated researcher winning a number of awards and recognitions over the years. Professor Yan’s main research areas are stochastic models, machine learning and algorithms, risk modelling and analysis, and supply chain management. He received his B.Sc. and M.Sc. from Tsinghua University, both in electrical engineering, and his Ph.D. from the University of Toronto in business. He is a member of Hong Kong Academy of Finance.

Dr. Wu, Associate Professor of School of Data Science at City University of Hong Kong, is a quantitative finance researcher and has worked in investment banks Lehman Brothers, UBS, and DTCC.

His research appeared in top-tier journals including Management Science and Mathematical Finance with a focus in AI applied to finance. He is currently working on machine learning approach to financial risk management, term structure modelling in low interest rate environment, incentive analysis in matching and sharing platforms.

PROF. MINGHUA CHEN

Prof. Chen received his B.Eng. and M.Sc. degrees from the Department of Electronic Engineering at Tsinghua University and his Ph.D. degree from the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences at University of California Berkeley. He was with Microsoft Research Redmond and Department of Information Engineering, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, before joining the School of Data Science, City University of Hong Kong as a Professor in 2019. He also received several best paper awards, including IEEE ICME Best Paper Award in 2009, IEEE Transactions on Multimedia Prize Paper Award in 2009, and ACM Multimedia Best Paper Award in 2012. Prof. Chen’s recent research interests include online optimization and algorithms, machine learning in networked and societal systems, and capitalizing the benefit of data-driven prediction in algorithm/system design.

Prof. Chen joined as a Researcher. He is Professor of Systems Engineering and Engineering Management at The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK). He has published in top journals and referred conference proceedings in the fields of operations research and quantitative finance, such as Review of Financial Studies, Journal of Econometrics, Operations Research, Mathematics of Operations Research, Mathematical Finance, Finance and Stochastics, Journal of Economic Dynamics and Control. His research is supported by the scheme of General Research Fund, Hong Kong Research Grant Council. He is the Director of the Bachelor of Engineering Program in Financial Technology at CUHK and the director of Master of Science Program in Financial Engineering at CUHK, Shenzhen. He received his Ph.D. in operations research from Columbia University, and M.Sc. and B.Sc. in probability and statistics from Peking University, Beijing.

Dr. Feng joined as a Researcher. He is an Assistant Professor of Business Statistics at City University of Hong Kong. He is also the program leader of M.Sc. in Business Data Analytics (Quantitative Analysis for Business stream). His research work has been published or accepted at the Journal of Finance and Journal of Econometrics. His research work has received major academic and practitioner awards, including the 2018 AQR Insight Award, 2nd Prize of the 2019 Crowell Prize, Unigestion Alternative Risk Premia Research Grant Award, INQUIRE Europe Research Grant Award, and PwC 3535 Finance Forum Annual Best Paper Award. Also, Dr. Feng has been invited to present at major academic conferences (AFA, CICF, Informs, and SoFie) and practitioner conferences (CQAsia, Wolfe Research, and INQUIRE Europe). He obtained his Ph.D. and M.B.A. degrees from The University of Chicago in 2017. Prof. Li is Head of Department of Marketing, Professor of Marketing and Management Sciences, and Director of Fintech and Business Analytics Centre (FBAC) at the College of Business, City University of Hong Kong. He received a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science from Tsinghua University and his Ph.D. in Industrial Engineering and Engineering Management from Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. His research interests include (1) Decision analytics for marketing, logistics, and supply chain; and 2) Interface research between Operations and Marketing, such as pricing, assortment planning, channel management, and advertising. His papers have appeared in journals such as Marketing Science, Manufacturing & Service Operations Management, Operations Research, and Production and Operations Management. Prof Li has provided consulting services to firms in Hong Kong and mainland China and is currently working on data-driven projects spanning marketing, logistics, retailing, and health care operations.

Prof. Qin joined as a Senior Researcher. He obtained his B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees from Tsinghua University in Beijing, China, in 1984 and 1987, respectively, and his Ph.D degree from University of Maryland at College Park in 1992. He is currently Chair Professor of Data Science at the City University of Hong Kong. His research interests include data analytics, machine learning, latent variable methods; high-dimensional time series latent variable modelling, process monitoring and fault diagnosis, model predictive control, system identification, semiconductor manufacturing control, and data-driven control and optimization. He has over 400 publications in international journals, book chapters, conference papers, and conference presentations with peer-reviewed abstracts. He delivered over 50 invited plenary or keynote speeches and over 120 invited technical seminars worldwide. He is a recipient of the National Science Foundation CAREER Award, the 2011 Northrop Grumman Best Teaching award at Viterbi School of Engineering, the DuPont Young Professor Award, Halliburton/Brown & Root Young Faculty Excellence Award, NSF-China Outstanding Young Investigator Award, and recipient of the IFAC Best Paper Prize for a model predictive control survey paper published in Control Engineering Practice. He served as Senior Editor of Journal of Process Control, Editor of Control Engineering Practice, Member of the Editorial Board for Journal of Chemometrics, and Associate Editor for several other journals.

Prof. Zhang is the Department Head of Industrial Engineering and Decision Analytics (IEDA) of The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST). His research interests are in the areas of service operations management, queueing system and applied probability. He is an outstanding scholar in the field of Stochastic Modelling and Optimization, Statistical Learning, Numerical Methods and Algorithm, as evidenced by publishing ten papers in leading journals of his discipline since his substantiation, including Management Science, Operations Research, and Mathematics of Operations Research. He has been serving as Associate Editor for Operations Research, Stochastic Systems, and Queueing Models and Service Management, and an editorial board member for Probability in the Engineering and Informational Sciences.

Prof. Zhao received the B.Eng. Degree in Automatic Control in 1992, the B.Sc. He is currently a Professor and Director of the Center for Intelligent and Networked Systems (CFINS), Department of Automation, Tsinghua University. He has published more than 80 research papers in peer-reviewed journals and conferences. His current research interests include control and optimization of complex networked systems with applications in smart buildings, smart grid, and manufacturing automation. Professor Irwin King is a distinguished scholar in machine intelligence, currently serving as the Chair and Professor of Computer Science & Engineering at The Chinese University of Hong Kong. With a broad range of research interests covering areas such as machine learning, social computing, AI, and data mining, Professor King is a Fellow of prestigious societies and associations, including the IEEE, INNS, AAIA, HKIE, and ACM Distinguished Member. Over the years, he has played many leadership roles in various top conferences and societies, such as serving as the President of the International Neural Network Society, General Co-chair of conferences such as WebConf 2020, ICONIP 2020, ACML 2015, RecSys 2013, and WSDM 2011. He has also held several capacities in conferences such as WWW, NIPS, ICML, IJCAI, AAAI, and ICONIP.

Professor King has been honored with various prestigious awards in recognition of his contributions to the field of machine intelligence. Some of his notable awards include the 2021 INNS Dennis Gabor Award for engineering applications of neural networks, the 2020 APNNS Outstanding Achievement Award, and several Test of Time Awards from ACM conferences such as CIKM2019, SIGIR 2020, and WSDM 2022. Additionally, during his tenure with AT&T Labs Research, San Francisco, he also taught as a Visiting Professor at UC Berkeley.

Prof. Dapeng Oliver Wu received a B.Eng. Degree in Electrical Engineering from Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Wuhan, China, in 1990, an M.Eng. He is Yeung Kin Man Chair Professor of Network Science, and Chair Professor of Data Engineering at the Department of Computer Science, City University of Hong Kong.  Previously, he was on the faculty of University of Florida, Gainesville, FL, USA and was the director of NSF Center for Big Learning, USA.  His research interests are in the areas of networking, communications, signal processing, computer vision, machine learning, smart grid, and information and network security. He received University of Florida Term Professorship Award in 2017, University of Florida Research Foundation Professorship Award in 2009, AFOSR Young Investigator Program (YIP) Award in 2009, ONR Young Investigator Program (YIP) Award in 2008, NSF CAREER award in 2007, the IEEE Circuits and Systems for Video Technology (CSVT) Transactions Best Paper Award for Year 2001, and the Best Paper Awards in IEEE GLOBECOM 2011 and International Conference on Quality of Service in Heterogeneous Wired/Wireless Networks (QShine) 2006.

Dr. Michael C S Wong serves as EMBA Director and Associate Professor of Finance at City University of Hong Kong.  He specializes on international banking, risk management and financial markets. Dr. Wong architected the first Basel-standard internal ratings-based (IRB) system in Hong Kong in 2003-2005 and wealth management due diligence models after the collapse of Lehman Brothers in 2008. His risk management models are currently implemented by more than 25 regional and global financial institutions operating in Asia. Dr. Wong reviewed risk control and stress testing models for banking institutions, submitted independent risk assessment reports to company boards and regulators, and provided expert witness on legal disputes involving complex financial transactions. He served as a founding member of Global Association of Risk Professionals’ (GARP) FRM Committee, an examiner of professional examinations of both Hong Kong Securities and Investment Institute (HKSI) and Hong Kong Institute of Bankers (HKIB), a member of Market Misconduct Tribunal in Hong Kong, a member of Task Force of Hong Kong Insurance Authority, and an advisor of the Investor and Financial Education Council. He obtained his postgraduate degrees in Finance and Data Analytics respectively from the Chinese University of Hong Kong, University of Essex and University of Cambridge, and executive training at Berkeley, MIT and Cambridge.  Dr. Wong was a long-serving director of MSc programs in Finance, Banking and Financial Engineering (1998-2015) at CityU and was granted university-wide Teaching Excellence Award by the university in 1999.  His research, including his services to the financial industry, is selected by the university as a high-impact case for the UGC’s Research Assessment Exercise (RAE 2020).  In 2022, Dr. Wong serves as an editor of Sustainability on a special issue “Sustainable Finance and Risk Management”.  He also serves as a judge panel member of CityU’s HK Tech 300 in both seed and angel funding rounds.
